Closing NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) accelerator program 2022, <a href="https://www.jica.go.jp/indonesia/english/index.html">Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)</a> partnering with ANGIN, has released the impact reports of the 3 NINJA Cohorts 2022: Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia. These 2022 Impact Reports reflect the diverse achievement and contribution to the environment over the past year. These accomplishments are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in which JICA is pursuing throughout the NINJA Accelerator program. As this program accommodated the 3 startups in expanding their network in Indonesia, Japan, and abroad, these impact reports are expected to be the final action which might possibly enclose them to more potential opportunities.

March 28th, 2023 -&nbsp; <a href="https://www.jica.go.jp/indonesia/english/index.html">Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)</a> has a mission to support the SDG's goals by launching the NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) program. This program aims to support entrepreneurs and to accelerate business impact in emerging countries. Catching the collaborative atmosphere they have created, this program was decided to be continued in 2022 collaborating with <a href="https://www.angin.id">ANGIN </a>to support Indonesia’ entrepreneurs and engage more stakeholders. And now, NINJA Accelerator program 2022 has been finished along with the impact reports released for each Cohorts: Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia.&nbsp;

“This report was prepared as part of JICA's project NINJA in Indonesia in 2022.&nbsp; We hope that this report will deepen readers' understanding of Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia, and encourage more partners to work together to create and increase social impact,” said the JICA team explaining the 3 impact reports’ goal.

NINJA Accelerator 2022 program is focusing on supporting Indonesia’ entrepreneurship ecosystem specifically in low carbon emission and waste management solutions. Thus, these impact reports become the channel which optimally illustrate how the 3 Cohorts give their best in contributing their business to the Indonesia environment. Several achievements they got in 2022 were accommodated throughout the NINJA accelerator program 2022 by the tailored mentoring sessions, business showcase, and networking opportunities they have received during these past months, both in Indonesia and Japan. Embracing the startups' vision to boost sustainability, these impact reports share the aligned value with JICA and ANGIN in making a significant contribution in Indonesia.

IMPACT REPORTS OF NINJA 2022 COHORTS

2022 has been a year of growth for us at Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia. A lot of things happened besides being selected as NINJA Accelerator Cohorts 2022. Find some of their 2022 highlights here!

In February 2022, Bell Society finished building their new production facility – which enabled them to convert 500 kg of waste every month. Bell Society proudly established partnerships with 15 renowned brands, in which some of them have enabled Bell Society to sell a range of premium products to the global market.&nbsp; They are also expanding their exploration of M-Tex and other biomaterials for the utilization as materials outside the fashion industry by participating in design and architecture exhibitions: International Contemporary Art &amp; Design (ICAD) Exhibition 2022, collaborating with Trianzani Sulshi, and the "Building with Nature'' Exhibition by Erasmus Huis Jakarta. Furthermore, Bell Society plans to expand the production capacity by establishing new production sites in Anyer and Kalimantan as well as launch new materials suitable for the furniture and building industries.

2022 was the third year CarbonEthics strengthened its climate solutions services. They have educated 21,577 individuals on climate change, sequestering more than 6,630 tonnes of CO2e through blue carbon conservation and supporting 228 local beneficiaries across their operation sites. CarbonEthics was also chosen as The Official Decarbonization Partner for Y20 &amp; B20 and had the opportunity to speak at G20 Indonesia Presidency. In the same year, CarbonEthics executed a Benefit Sharing Plan with local stakeholders and deepened their scientific approach to testify their impact through numerous publications released. On the government relation side, CarbonEthics held the third Warung Kopi Karbon Biru, an in-depth discussion involving government officials, social enterprises, and NGOs, was held to escalate the readiness of the blue carbon project in Indonesia. 2023 is the year to escalate CarbonEthics’ impact even further by becoming an Impact Enterprise and broadening their reach.

In 2022, Surplus Indonesia achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the B Corporation certification, which demonstrates the company's commitment to creating a positive social and environmental impact. To date, the Surplus application has saved over 30 tons of food which has prevented the emission of 350 tons of CO2eq from being produced if food becomes waste and reduced 80% food waste for Surplus Indonesia’s partners. The company has also established collaborations with various organizations, including the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sarinah Mall, the National Food Agency, and HIPPINDO, to achieve its mission of preventing food waste in Indonesia. Looking ahead to 2023, Surplus aims to triple its impact and expand its cooperation, particularly with the government to accelerate policies regarding food waste.

In order to accelerate their impact and innovation, those 3 Cohorts plan to expand their business with more local, national, as well as global partnerships and collaboration. These three impact reports bring the hope of Indonesia enterprises to chase their mission on sustainability in 2023 and ahead.

JICA Support towards Indonesian Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: 3 NINJA Cohorts 2022 Released Impact Reports!

First time in the history of <a href="https://www.jica.go.jp/indonesia/english/index.html">Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)</a> partnering with ANGIN, NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) accelerator Demo Day in Japan has been successfully held on Thursday, February 16th, 2023, bringing three selected Indonesian startups to Tokyo, Japan.

NINJA Accelerator Demo Day in Japan was held on Thursday, February 16th, 2023 at JICA HQ, Tokyo. <a href="https://www.jica.go.jp/indonesia/english/index.html">Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)</a>, collaborating with <a href="https://www.angin.id">ANGIN</a>, has selected 3 Indonesian startups as NINJA 2022 Cohort. The 3 cohorts provide solutions in waste management and low carbon emission areas: Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia. They have been selected in November 2022 over other 256 applicants, then supported with the&nbsp; tailored mentoring sessions covering 4 topics: Business, Fundraising, Japanese Cultural, and Pitch Coaching, with the Impact consultation sessions.

After going through all the phases of the JICA NINJA Accelerator 2022, Semeru Gita Lestari, COO of Bell Society, recently shared about her journey during the program. “JICA NINJA Project is an amazing and helpful program for startups! The quality of the accelerator, the sincerity of the mentors, the discussion and the support, and the new connections that they’re trying to build were excellent. It also helped us both with client engagement and investor readiness. Along the way, we have built a great network with other startups and potential partners and collaborators in Japan. The experience gained on the JICA NINJA Project is something I will forever be grateful for!” she explained.

This Demo Day in Japan remarks the end phase of the NINJA accelerator program 2022 to support the startups in showcasing their business to meet with curated local, regional, Japanese, and global investors. The event was started by the warm greeting&nbsp; from Mr. Keiji Katai, Senior Director, Planning and Strategy Division, Private Sector Partnership and Finance Department of JICA HQ.&nbsp;

“JICA believes all three start-ups have great potential to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as climate change and food waste, and also scale to larger business size with the possible partnership with the audience today. Hope that today's session will lead to partnerships between start-ups and you, which will make a significant contribution to solving social problems in Indonesia,” Mr. Keiji Katai said.

&nbsp;On the occasion, Aisha Nadira, Partnership Business Development Lead at ANGIN, also had an opportunity to share about Indonesia entrepreneurship ecosystem, which hopefully can connect Japan to Indonesia business parties closer and be able to create another fruitful collaboration. The attendees were not limited to Japanese investors and partners, but also Indonesian representatives in Japan. The Cohorts have been engaged intimately and received more intensive feedback in order to have a continuous partnership or financial collaboration. NINJA 2022 Cohorts were fully accommodated to optimize the business trip in Japan, including to have In-person meetings with several connected and potential investors and partners in Japan.&nbsp;

“I think the JICA NINJA Accelerator Demo Day in Japan is impressive, especially for early-stage startups since it provides networking opportunities that connect us with potential investors, business partners, and other stakeholders that we would not otherwise be able to meet. We hope that this program will be a sustainable one that assists many early-stage startups that need to grow their businesses in Indonesia. They have been selected in November 2022 over other 256 applicants, then supported with the&nbsp; tailored mentoring sessions covering 4 topics: Business, Fundraising, Japanese Cultural, and Pitch Coaching, with the Impact consultation sessions.After going through all the phases of the JICA NINJA Accelerator 2022, Semeru Gita Lestari, COO of Bell Society, recently shared about her journey during the program. “JICA NINJA Project is an amazing and helpful program for startups! This year, <a href="https://www.jica.go.jp/indonesia/english/index.html">Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)</a> focuses on assisting economic and social growth in Indonesia by collaborating with <a href="https://www.angin.id">ANGIN</a> on NINJA accelerator program 2022. The 3 Indonesian startups selected as NINJA 2022 Cohort are: Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia. Ranging from pre-seed to pre-series A stage, the startups provide solutions in waste management and low carbon emission areas. For the past 3 months, these startups have been going through a curated selection process with the other 256 applicants and equipped with mentoring sessions. What differentiates this program is the Cohorts are fully supported by the&nbsp; tailored mentoring sessions covering 4 topics: Business, Fundraising, Japan Business Culture, and Pitch Coaching, with the Impact consultation sessions.

Closing the program, Demo Day in Jakarta has been conducted to support the startups in showcasing their business to curated with local, regional, Japanese, and global investors. The Demo Day was held on Thursday, February 9th, 2023 at XenSpace, South Jakarta, supported by Xendit. It started with a talkshow which was inviting notable speakers: Almira Zulfikar, Founder and COO of Plépah, and Tania Lestari, Vice President at Openspace Ventures. The theme raised for this session is “Value in Impact vs Business: Capturing Business Opportunities Through Scaling Impact During Economic Downcycle”.&nbsp;

“JICA believes all three start-ups have great potential to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as climate change and food waste, and also scaling to larger business size. We hope that today's session will lead to partnerships between start-ups and you all, which will be significant to solving social problems in Indonesia,” said Takehiro Yasui, Chief Representative of JICA&nbsp; Indonesia Office, during the opening remarks.&nbsp;

83 attendees actively participated, including the investors, partners, governments, Indonesian startups, and media. NINJA 2022 Cohorts have been engaged intimately with the attendees, where both parties exchanged feedback to boost the business growth, strategy, and operation, as well as exploring further collaboration opportunities. To strengthen the connection, the attendees also had the opportunity for networking and exploring business and investment opportunities at the end of the event.
