/ JICA Support towards Indonesian Entrepreneurial Ecosystem: 3 NINJA Cohorts 2022 Released Impact Reports!
Closing NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) accelerator program 2022, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) partnering with ANGIN, has released the impact reports of the 3 NINJA Cohorts 2022: Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia. These 2022 Impact Reports reflect the diverse achievement and contribution to the environment over the past year. These accomplishments are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in which JICA is pursuing throughout the NINJA Accelerator program. As this program accommodated the 3 startups in expanding their network in Indonesia, Japan, and abroad, these impact reports are expected to be the final action which might possibly enclose them to more potential opportunities.
March 28th, 2023 - Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has a mission to support the SDG's goals by launching the NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) program. This program aims to support entrepreneurs and to accelerate business impact in emerging countries. Catching the collaborative atmosphere they have created, this program was decided to be continued in 2022 collaborating with ANGIN to support Indonesia’ entrepreneurs and engage more stakeholders. And now, NINJA Accelerator program 2022 has been finished along with the impact reports released for each Cohorts: Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia.
“This report was prepared as part of JICA's project NINJA in Indonesia in 2022. We hope that this report will deepen readers' understanding of Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia, and encourage more partners to work together to create and increase social impact,” said the JICA team explaining the 3 impact reports’ goal.
NINJA Accelerator 2022 program is focusing on supporting Indonesia’ entrepreneurship ecosystem specifically in low carbon emission and waste management solutions. Thus, these impact reports become the channel which optimally illustrate how the 3 Cohorts give their best in contributing their business to the Indonesia environment. Several achievements they got in 2022 were accommodated throughout the NINJA accelerator program 2022 by the tailored mentoring sessions, business showcase, and networking opportunities they have received during these past months, both in Indonesia and Japan. Embracing the startups' vision to boost sustainability, these impact reports share the aligned value with JICA and ANGIN in making a significant contribution in Indonesia.

IMPACT REPORTS OF NINJA 2022 COHORTS
2022 has been a year of growth for us at Bell Society, CarbonEthics, and Surplus Indonesia. A lot of things happened besides being selected as NINJA Accelerator Cohorts 2022. Find some of their 2022 highlights here!
Bell Society
In February 2022, Bell Society finished building their new production facility – which enabled them to convert 500 kg of waste every month. Bell Society proudly established partnerships with 15 renowned brands, in which some of them have enabled Bell Society to sell a range of premium products to the global market. They are also expanding their exploration of M-Tex and other biomaterials for the utilization as materials outside the fashion industry by participating in design and architecture exhibitions: International Contemporary Art & Design (ICAD) Exhibition 2022, collaborating with Trianzani Sulshi, and the "Building with Nature'' Exhibition by Erasmus Huis Jakarta. Furthermore, Bell Society plans to expand the production capacity by establishing new production sites in Anyer and Kalimantan as well as launch new materials suitable for the furniture and building industries.
CarbonEthics
2022 was the third year CarbonEthics strengthened its climate solutions services. They have educated 21,577 individuals on climate change, sequestering more than 6,630 tonnes of CO2e through blue carbon conservation and supporting 228 local beneficiaries across their operation sites. CarbonEthics was also chosen as The Official Decarbonization Partner for Y20 & B20 and had the opportunity to speak at G20 Indonesia Presidency. In the same year, CarbonEthics executed a Benefit Sharing Plan with local stakeholders and deepened their scientific approach to testify their impact through numerous publications released. On the government relation side, CarbonEthics held the third Warung Kopi Karbon Biru, an in-depth discussion involving government officials, social enterprises, and NGOs, was held to escalate the readiness of the blue carbon project in Indonesia. 2023 is the year to escalate CarbonEthics’ impact even further by becoming an Impact Enterprise and broadening their reach.
Surplus Indonesia
In 2022, Surplus Indonesia achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the B Corporation certification, which demonstrates the company's commitment to creating a positive social and environmental impact. To date, the Surplus application has saved over 30 tons of food which has prevented the emission of 350 tons of CO2eq from being produced if food becomes waste and reduced 80% food waste for Surplus Indonesia’s partners. The company has also established collaborations with various organizations, including the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sarinah Mall, the National Food Agency, and HIPPINDO, to achieve its mission of preventing food waste in Indonesia. Looking ahead to 2023, Surplus aims to triple its impact and expand its cooperation, particularly with the government to accelerate policies regarding food waste.
In order to accelerate their impact and innovation, those 3 Cohorts plan to expand their business with more local, national, as well as global partnerships and collaboration. These three impact reports bring the hope of Indonesia enterprises to chase their mission on sustainability in 2023 and ahead.

Ultimately, JICA NINJA Accelerator team 2022 believes that the support given to the 3 Cohorts will not only boost their positive impact but also fruitfully boost the movement of the whole Indonesia entrepreneurial ecosystem.
MEET THE NINJA 2022 COHORTS
Bell Society develops and produces biomaterial leather by converting coffee skin waste, as well as other organic waste. Leather is used as bags, shoes, wallet materials. Bell Society sources coffee and organic waste from cafes, restaurants and directly from coffee farmer cooperatives. Their growth plans will include the scale and global distribution in order to be the global brands and have collaboration all over the world within the next 2 years.
CarbonEthics encourages institutions and individuals to calculate, reduce, and absorb their carbon emissions through carbon calculation, carbon consultation, and carbon sequestration via natural climate solutions. Every climate action taken with CarbonEthics is also directly improving the livelihoods of local communities. Growing to Impact Enterprise, CarbonEthics envisions to accelerate the race to Net Zero by making the decarbonization effort effortless.
Surplus is an application for ordering excess food stock from bakeries, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and vegetable and fruit suppliers at a discount of up to 50% during certain times. Surplus is a solution for the culinary business to maximize the sale of excess stock so that it is not wasted and continues to benefit as well as a solution for customers who want to get food with good quality and affordable prices. Surplus plans to expand its reach and cooperation with various types of culinary businesses in Indonesia.
