The event explored a radical idea: complaints can be your greatest source of insight and revenue, if only companies dared to listen.

And listen they did. Senior management who attended the event came from private foundations, telecommunications, finance, real estate and hospitality industries.

If complaints aren’t bad news for companies, why don’t more customers speak up?

Many don’t think anything will get done, or the situation could worsen further. Dr. Barlow shared an anecdote about people being afraid to complain to their doctors, worrying that voicing their concerns might lead to worse treatment.

The same logic applies in business: silence from customers can be far more dangerous than complaints. These are the customers who simply walk away–the 50% you’ll never see again.

But, here's the twist: 60-70% of customers who have their complaints resolved satisfactorily go on to buy five times more than they initially would have.

"If you solve their concerns instead of over-apologizing, they’ll actually come back to repurchase five times more,” Dr. Barlow said. “This is the power of complaint handling in the language of revenue and results.”

Only 1 in 10,000 written complaints ever make their way to senior management. In the US, companies are losing 1 trillion dollars due to poor complaint handling.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Barlow emphasized the need to break down silos. Businesses must instead foster a culture where everyone feels responsible for addressing customer concerns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Too often, companies are laser-focused on acquiring new customers, missing the retention goldmine.&nbsp;

Retaining existing customers is significantly cheaper than attracting new ones. And the rewards are exponential. A small increase in retention can lead to a dramatic uptick in profits.

“Most companies spend half of their revenue attracting new customers,” Dr. Barlow revealed. “But retaining even just 5% of your customers can lead to up to 95% profit increase.”

First, widen your customers’ tolerance zone. “When customers feel understood and valued, they are far more forgiving,” Dr. Barlow explained. Instead of reacting defensively, aim to create an environment where your customers feel heard.&nbsp;

Next, speed. “Above all, what customers want from service is responsiveness,” Dr. Barlow emphasized. Quick resolutions show that you value their time and concerns. When you act swiftly, you not only diffuse anger but also demonstrate your company’s commitment to resolving problems.&nbsp;

Big data can speed up resolution. “Access to every data point can address the root cause of customer complaints and understand them beyond face value.”

Finally, fairness is more important than you realize. Customers aren’t just looking for their problem to be solved—they want it handled fairly. When your solution feels balanced and just, customers are more likely to leave with a positive impression, even if things didn’t start off smoothly.&nbsp;

Anyone who’s been inside these themed suites can attest that the beauty is in the details. From the Red Light, Green Light guns to the MRT train hand railings and color schemes, the rooms are designed accurately. Maybe too accurately.

After all, aren’t guests the ‘main character’ of their fantasies?&nbsp;

Speaking of getting into your main character era, who isn’t planning a spicy, steamy experience this Valentine’s Day? Whether we hide it or not, it’s been a long-standing tradition for Victoria Court to create an adult playground for love and intimacy this time of the year.&nbsp;

Victoria Court Owner Atticus King weighs in on how they’ve turned the drive-in motel chain’s themed suites from ideas into guests’ short-lived realities: “I had a professor once say, a room is a room is a room. With that in mind, we thought about how important it is to go beyond that, we wanted to give them an experience they couldn’t just get anywhere and that would make a mental mark and become a core memory. “Remember that time we went to VC…”

Yes, how could one forget a rendezvous night spent with their partner trying to live happily ever after? Victoria Court’s Ever After room in Pasig can do just the trick. The room’s jacuzzi is their biggest one yet, and you can literally float on it without touching the sides of the tub. Talk about real happy endings, right?&nbsp;

You’d also be surprised to know which themed rooms are well-suited to the Filipino taste. “We have the most number of suites in our Panorama Branch in Pasig. There, our top 10 busiest rooms are CLOY, Chips, Squid Room, Oval Office, Venice, Bachelor’s Pad, Moulin Rouge, Cirque, 50 Shades, and yes, Princess Jasmine,” Chief Operating Officer Sam Pineda reveals.&nbsp;

We’re not here to gatekeep on other steamy perks these rooms have to offer. “Aside from custom-built jacuzzis, we have rooms with playful additions like places to strap folks in. Our Homerun and Casting Couch rooms in Pasig are good examples,” Pineda adds.

Of course, behind each themed room is a story of how it came to be. “It’s a combination of looking at what is trending, what is underserved, and what we think looks fun. When we built the Oval Office room, my father [the late Archie King] said I’d end up losing my visa because it was a replica of the Oval Office but my selling point was how often can you say I’ve partied in the Oval Office? The room was a hit when we launched it and I didn’t lose my visa,” King explains, laughing.

But how exactly does the motel chain decide which fandom or Netflix show will turn into the next themed suite? “We have several recipes but to be honest, sometimes themes we think will be a big hit just do okay and others that are okay do exceptionally well. We always listen to our guests and we try to design themes to make their crazy fantasies real,” King says.

Even then, Victoria Court has moved away from its public perception of being a mere ‘biglang-liko’ or place for illicit affairs to a hotel chain that hosts (wholesome) parties and offers an award-winning food menu.&nbsp;

“The bigger suites are typically what end up hosting parties (and some couple stays). For couple stays, we find that while some regulars have a favorite room, others prefer not to use a room they’ve already seen - and that’s what’s beautiful about it,” Pineda explains. “You can choose or you can just go for any and be (pleasantly) surprised!”

Guests, despite being discreet, aren’t shy to offer a thought or two about these rooms. “We’ve received great feedback from either camp, with some loving the variety, while others have a favorite jacuzzi, enjoying the special effects, the tantra chair, or even something as simple as preferring rooms with more mirrors.” Pineda says.

Not all themed rooms are here to stay, though. But some rooms are classics and crowd-favorites that guests will always come back to now and then. “When we see a certain theme starting to look dated, we decide whether to reinvest to upgrade it or what we fondly like to call belo and make it fresh again or we take a vote on what new theme we can reintroduce.”&nbsp;

But more than rooms to play out fantasies is a vision to create an adult Disney experience for King: “I think our product will continue to evolve to serve couples looking for an experience that will bring them right to the edge of their comfort zone and inject that feeling of adventure.”

However, the study also revealed that the increased pricing of travel has become the biggest worry of 67.48% of Filipinos about travel in 2023, particularly with inflation and soaring commodity prices looming in the backdrop. Nonetheless, industry experts and government officials remain optimistic about the sector's recovery. Philippine real estate company DoubleDragon Corp said on Tuesday it is considering listing its Singapore-registered unit Hotel101 Global on the U.S. Nasdaq via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC.

DoubleDragon confirmed in response to a local media report that it was weighing the SPAC route as one option to accelerate the international expansion of hotel group Hotel101.

"We likewise clarify, that the amount of equity to be raised will still be finalised at a future date, although it is notable that generally, most SPACs invest about $200 million for mergers and acquisitions," the company said in a stock exchange filing.

DoubleDragon said it targets for Hotel101 to reach a valuation of up to $17 billion in the near term based on the hotel operator's internal financial projections, but gave no more details.

Hotel101 provides mid-class hotel accommodation for leisure and business travellers in the Philippines, according to its website. DoubleDragon said Hotel101 will expand to 25 countries including the United States and China by 2026.

SPACs are seen as a quick route to a stock market listing but the once frenzied SPAC market has cooled as it came under closer scrutiny from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission amid concerns over what some saw as less stringent due diligence practices.

DoubleDragon's plan follows that of Vietnamese electric vehicle company VinFast, which plans to list in the United States this month via a merger with a SPAC called Black Spade Acquisition.

The new merged entity was estimated by VinFast and Black Spade to have a potential equity value of $23 billion.

"We also take note from recent news articles that Vietnam is expected to produce their first NASDAQ SPAC company this year with VinFast EV company, and it is the aspiration of DoubleDragon's Hotel101 to become the first of the same from the Philippines," DoubleDragon said.

Tan, chief executive officer, AGI.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With an array of topnotch offerings, including eight different restaurants, guests are in for quite a treat at Manila Marriott Hotel.The Philippine tourism industry has been&nbsp;in a strong&nbsp;recovery mode&nbsp;since last year&nbsp;after reeling from&nbsp;the impact of the global health crisis which started three years ago. &nbsp;As the Philippine economy&nbsp;continued&nbsp;to&nbsp;reopen&nbsp;alongside most&nbsp;economies around the globe,&nbsp;the sector&nbsp;saw&nbsp;increased discretionary spending for staycations,&nbsp;travel, leisure and entertainment, and the resurgence in MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions)&nbsp;activities&nbsp;throughout the country.&nbsp;In 2022, revenues from AGI’s tourism segment reached an historic high of P38.6 billion,&nbsp;growing&nbsp;by 84% year-on-year and even exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 levels by 10%. &nbsp;“This segment has grown its importance within the Group&nbsp;and now contributes&nbsp;over&nbsp;20% of AGI’s&nbsp;business&nbsp;from its share of&nbsp;15-16% about five years ago,”&nbsp;reveals&nbsp;Tan.

“We looked for volunteer artists by posting publicly on Facebook who were willing to paint or make any kind of art out of hulmahan [shoe molds] that are no longer being used because the pandemic hit the struggling shoe industry in Marikina, the Shoe Capital of the Philippines,” relates Bernardo. The call for volunteers had a positive response that hundreds of artists all over the Philippines expressed interest. The Manila Hotel’s creative consultant Rachy Cuna, National Artists Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and Kidlat Tahimik, sculptors Pete Jimenez, Jonathan Dangue, Julie Lluch-Dalena, and thespian Dolly De Leon are some of the participating artists whose works are featured in Project Hulmahan.

Project Hulmahan is a brainchild of Zena Bernardo, one of the members of Ladies Who Launch (LWL) and one of the co-founders of Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya. Ms. Bernardo met with shut down shoe manufacturers in her hometown, Marikina, and their group purchased almost 500 pairs of shoe molds with the intention of transforming them into artworks to earn funds for community- based activities.

“It is fitting that The Manila Hotel collaborates with inspiring ladies, as the Grand Dame celebrates ladies, especially mothers, in the month of May”, says Marvin Kim Tan, Director of Sales and Marketing of The Manila Hotel. Ladies Who Launch is a four-woman team made up of Zena Bernardo (mother of Ana Patricia ‘Patreng’ of the famed Maginhawa community pantry), Dolly De Leon, internationally-acclaimed actress, Judith Albano, and Jasmine Ong. They were the founders of the community kitchen, which assisted many people during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The proceeds from the artworks will benefit the advocacy efforts of these three organizations: Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya for community kitchen and livelihood programs, The Community Kitchen Project for nationwide disaster response, and a community-based art school for kids.

“Sa akin napaka-deep ng story ng [Project] Hulmahan. We want to give dignity back to the community; we consider them as partners in our community-based projects and not beggars. We may not be popular, but we want to be transparent and accountable. [Project] Hulmahan is about molding a person and molding a society. The success of this project will depend on working together and pooling resources so we can ensure that those in need have access to necessities during these challenging times,” says Bernardo.

Project Hulmahan is on display at The Manila Hotel’s Grand Lobby and Art Gallery until May 20, 2023. Admission is free.

To culminate the fundraising endeavor, a grand auction will be held at Centennial Hall of The Manila Hotel on May 21 from 6PM to 11PM. This is by invitation only.
