Anyone who’s been inside these themed suites can attest that the beauty is in the details. From the Red Light, Green Light guns to the MRT train hand railings and color schemes, the rooms are designed accurately. Maybe too accurately.

Speaking of getting into your main character era, who isn’t planning a spicy, steamy experience this Valentine’s Day? Whether we hide it or not, it’s been a long-standing tradition for Victoria Court to create an adult playground for love and intimacy this time of the year.&nbsp;

Victoria Court Owner Atticus King weighs in on how they’ve turned the drive-in motel chain’s themed suites from ideas into guests’ short-lived realities: “I had a professor once say, a room is a room is a room. With that in mind, we thought about how important it is to go beyond that, we wanted to give them an experience they couldn’t just get anywhere and that would make a mental mark and become a core memory. “Remember that time we went to VC…”

Yes, how could one forget a rendezvous night spent with their partner trying to live happily ever after? Victoria Court’s Ever After room in Pasig can do just the trick. The room’s jacuzzi is their biggest one yet, and you can literally float on it without touching the sides of the tub. Talk about real happy endings, right?&nbsp;

You’d also be surprised to know which themed rooms are well-suited to the Filipino taste. “We have the most number of suites in our Panorama Branch in Pasig. There, our top 10 busiest rooms are CLOY, Chips, Squid Room, Oval Office, Venice, Bachelor’s Pad, Moulin Rouge, Cirque, 50 Shades, and yes, Princess Jasmine,” Chief Operating Officer Sam Pineda reveals.&nbsp;

We’re not here to gatekeep on other steamy perks these rooms have to offer. “Aside from custom-built jacuzzis, we have rooms with playful additions like places to strap folks in. Our Homerun and Casting Couch rooms in Pasig are good examples,” Pineda adds.

Of course, behind each themed room is a story of how it came to be. “It’s a combination of looking at what is trending, what is underserved, and what we think looks fun. When we built the Oval Office room, my father [the late Archie King] said I’d end up losing my visa because it was a replica of the Oval Office but my selling point was how often can you say I’ve partied in the Oval Office? The room was a hit when we launched it and I didn’t lose my visa,” King explains, laughing.

But how exactly does the motel chain decide which fandom or Netflix show will turn into the next themed suite? “We have several recipes but to be honest, sometimes themes we think will be a big hit just do okay and others that are okay do exceptionally well. We always listen to our guests and we try to design themes to make their crazy fantasies real,” King says.

Even then, Victoria Court has moved away from its public perception of being a mere ‘biglang-liko’ or place for illicit affairs to a hotel chain that hosts (wholesome) parties and offers an award-winning food menu.&nbsp;

“The bigger suites are typically what end up hosting parties (and some couple stays). For couple stays, we find that while some regulars have a favorite room, others prefer not to use a room they’ve already seen - and that’s what’s beautiful about it,” Pineda explains. “You can choose or you can just go for any and be (pleasantly) surprised!”

Guests, despite being discreet, aren’t shy to offer a thought or two about these rooms. “We’ve received great feedback from either camp, with some loving the variety, while others have a favorite jacuzzi, enjoying the special effects, the tantra chair, or even something as simple as preferring rooms with more mirrors.” Pineda says.

Not all themed rooms are here to stay, though. But some rooms are classics and crowd-favorites that guests will always come back to now and then. “When we see a certain theme starting to look dated, we decide whether to reinvest to upgrade it or what we fondly like to call belo and make it fresh again or we take a vote on what new theme we can reintroduce.”&nbsp;

But more than rooms to play out fantasies is a vision to create an adult Disney experience for King: “I think our product will continue to evolve to serve couples looking for an experience that will bring them right to the edge of their comfort zone and inject that feeling of adventure.”

What's holding Filipinos back from traveling? Study reveals top concerns

The travel and tourism industry in the Philippines is a crucial driver of economic growth, the country is looking for a strong comeback after facing significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, the industry contributed a remarkable 12.7% to the country's GDP, amounting to PhP 2.48 trillion, and employed around 5.7 million Filipinos, making it a vital source of income for local communities.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to the sector, causing massive disruptions and job losses over the past few years. In 2021, the sector was only able to contribute 5.2% to the country’s GDP. Tourism employment in 2021 also took a nosedive at an estimated 4.90 million, which, while higher than the 4.68 million recorded in 2020, is still significantly lower than pre-COVID numbers.

Amidst the adversity, promising signs of recovery are evident. According to a <a href="https://standard-insights.com/consumer-reports/philippines-2023/">new study by Standard Insights</a>, 76.63% of Filipinos feel safe and secure when traveling internationally despite the COVID-19 situation. Only 6.2% feel insecure about international travel this year. This resurgence of confidence signals a potential revival of the travel and tourism industry.

However, the study also revealed that the increased pricing of travel has become the biggest worry of 67.48% of Filipinos about travel in 2023, particularly with inflation and soaring commodity prices looming in the backdrop. Philippine real estate company DoubleDragon Corp said on Tuesday it is considering listing its Singapore-registered unit Hotel101 Global on the U.S. Nasdaq via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC.

DoubleDragon confirmed in response to a local media report that it was weighing the SPAC route as one option to accelerate the international expansion of hotel group Hotel101.

"We likewise clarify, that the amount of equity to be raised will still be finalised at a future date, although it is notable that generally, most SPACs invest about $200 million for mergers and acquisitions," the company said in a stock exchange filing.

DoubleDragon said it targets for Hotel101 to reach a valuation of up to $17 billion in the near term based on the hotel operator's internal financial projections, but gave no more details.

Hotel101 provides mid-class hotel accommodation for leisure and business travellers in the Philippines, according to its website. DoubleDragon said Hotel101 will expand to 25 countries including the United States and China by 2026.

SPACs are seen as a quick route to a stock market listing but the once frenzied SPAC market has cooled as it came under closer scrutiny from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission amid concerns over what some saw as less stringent due diligence practices.

DoubleDragon's plan follows that of Vietnamese electric vehicle company VinFast, which plans to list in the United States this month via a merger with a SPAC called Black Spade Acquisition.

The new merged entity was estimated by VinFast and Black Spade to have a potential equity value of $23 billion.

"We also take note from recent news articles that Vietnam is expected to produce their first NASDAQ SPAC company this year with VinFast EV company, and it is the aspiration of DoubleDragon's Hotel101 to become the first of the same from the Philippines," DoubleDragon said.

“We looked for volunteer artists by posting publicly on Facebook who were willing to paint or make any kind of art out of hulmahan [shoe molds] that are no longer being used because the pandemic hit the struggling shoe industry in Marikina, the Shoe Capital of the Philippines,” relates Bernardo. The call for volunteers had a positive response that hundreds of artists all over the Philippines expressed interest. The Manila Hotel’s creative consultant Rachy Cuna, National Artists Maestro Ryan Cayabyab and Kidlat Tahimik, sculptors Pete Jimenez, Jonathan Dangue, Julie Lluch-Dalena, and thespian Dolly De Leon are some of the participating artists whose works are featured in Project Hulmahan.

Project Hulmahan is a brainchild of Zena Bernardo, one of the members of Ladies Who Launch (LWL) and one of the co-founders of Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya. Ms. Bernardo met with shut down shoe manufacturers in her hometown, Marikina, and their group purchased almost 500 pairs of shoe molds with the intention of transforming them into artworks to earn funds for community- based activities.

“It is fitting that The Manila Hotel collaborates with inspiring ladies, as the Grand Dame celebrates ladies, especially mothers, in the month of May”, says Marvin Kim Tan, Director of Sales and Marketing of The Manila Hotel. Ladies Who Launch is a four-woman team made up of Zena Bernardo (mother of Ana Patricia ‘Patreng’ of the famed Maginhawa community pantry), Dolly De Leon, internationally-acclaimed actress, Judith Albano, and Jasmine Ong. They were the founders of the community kitchen, which assisted many people during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The proceeds from the artworks will benefit the advocacy efforts of these three organizations: Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya for community kitchen and livelihood programs, The Community Kitchen Project for nationwide disaster response, and a community-based art school for kids.

“Sa akin napaka-deep ng story ng [Project] Hulmahan. We want to give dignity back to the community; we consider them as partners in our community-based projects and not beggars. We may not be popular, but we want to be transparent and accountable. [Project] Hulmahan is about molding a person and molding a society. The success of this project will depend on working together and pooling resources so we can ensure that those in need have access to necessities during these challenging times,” says Bernardo.

Project Hulmahan is on display at The Manila Hotel’s Grand Lobby and Art Gallery until May 20, 2023. Admission is free.
