In the endless concrete jungles of Metro Manila, feeling overwhelmed and lost is easy. From towering buildings to the multitudes who live and work here, the individual has little room to really express themselves.

Even on social media, these spaces are becoming increasingly crowded. Algorithms and the focus on popular and trending content frequently drown out the voices of original content and small artists. More than ever, there is a pressing need for a place where these Filipino creators can have their works given the proper attention they deserve.

Fortunately, a new initiative aims to change all of this.

At the latest “Write Side of Bookshelf” session at the SM Aura Book Nook, publisher Bookshelf PH officially unveiled their new digital magazine Blankscape. The magazine aims to be a safe place where creators can have their works presented and even polished to be the very best they can be.

The magazine is divided into different sections for paintings (Strokes), poetry (Stanzas), prose (Sentences), and photography (Shots), catering to all forms of creative and artistic expression possible.

The name Blankscape, a play on the words “blank space” and “landscape”, represents something more profound. It represents an empty canvas, a world waiting to be given life and color. Through this initiative, the publisher hopes to foster creativity and artistic expression by providing creatives a safe space to develop their craft, one page at a time.

To celebrate the launch of the new platform, attendees participated in a very special activity.&nbsp; Using provided pencils and paper, they were given ten minutes to express themselves and create works based on the theme, “Escape”. This theme perfectly represents the type of creative expression that Blankscape wishes to cultivate–that anyone can find safety from the constant restraints and overbearing noise of the outside world and the mainstream and be free to develop their ideas.

After the ten minutes were up, several of the participants showcased their works. One of them, for instance, interpreted the theme in the drawing of a child lost in the pages of a book, his imagination taking him to new places and faces never before seen.&nbsp;

“I can’t draw to save my life,” Monette, one of the co-founders of Bookshelf, jokingly said to the audience. “But even though I can’t draw, I still want to help others who can. Among us, many can write and draw.” Bookshelf PH itself was created to help meet a pressing need she noticed during the pandemic–a lack of books about Filipino businesses and local stories. Over time, the publisher has expanded its reach beyond its original scope.

Now, they wish to do the same for Filipino creatives. They too deserve a place where they can explore and spread their wings in an environment suited perfectly for free and total creative expression–a blankscape.

Bookshelf PH Brings Unique Stories to Life at MIBF 2024

As the country gets ready to celebrate National Heroes Day on August 26 (yes a long weekend is here again) we meet a new set of heroes.&nbsp;

As Arizona Robbins from Grey’s Anatomy said, not all heroes wear capes. Some happen to be tiny humans. Now, another teenager and her friends set out to create a lasting impact in the Philippine arts and culture space by publishing the first book of the ongoing children’s book series, The Adventures of Damgo: Betta and the Dry Lands.

At just 16 years old, Jacqueline Dominique “Nikki” Go is already creating heroic contributions to art and pediatric cancer communities.&nbsp;

As the founder of the Damgo Art Therapy Foundation and the author of The Adventures of Damgo, Nikki’s journey starts with the love for family and art.

Nikki’s artistic interests began in early childhood, nurtured by supportive parents who, despite not being artists themselves, recognized and cultivated their daughter’s creative talents. "I’ve always felt happiest when I get lost creating art," Nikki shares.&nbsp;

This passion for art, however, was juxtaposed against a backdrop of loss and heartache as cancer took the lives of several close family members. "Cancer is hereditary, and I have it on both sides of my family. I’ve lost 3 uncles to cancer, and my grandma and aunt are survivors," Nikki recounts.&nbsp;

These experiences naturally fueled her curiosity and empathy toward cancer patients and survivors, eventually leading her to establish the Damgo Art Therapy Foundation.

Like most youth-led initiatives, the foundation originated from Nikki’s 8th-grade school project aimed at contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).&nbsp;

While her peers focused on themes like poverty and sustainability, Nikki chose to explore the impact of art on mental well-being, particularly among teenagers. "I saw a huge lift in happiness when teenagers were exposed to art." Nikki explains. This discovery ignited a deeper inquiry into the beneficiaries of art therapy, ultimately guiding her to Bahay Aruga, a halfway home for pediatric cancer patients.

"When I approached Bahay Aruga, I wanted to offer something more valuable than monetary donations. Something that would have a lasting positive effect on the patients… art therapy had that effect," says Nikki.&nbsp;

The Damgo Art Therapy Foundation was born out of this desire, and it quickly became hope for young cancer patients. Through art therapy sessions, Nikki witnessed firsthand the transformative power of creativity. "One of my students said that she 'couldn’t believe she is able to paint the things she’s done.' She told me how she looked forward&nbsp; to our art therapy sessions, and she carries this feeling when she goes for treatment."

Inspired by the children’s resilience and imagination, Nikki penned The Adventures of Damgo, a series that takes cancer patients on a cosmic journey filled with limitless possibilities. "I hope that through these stories, children all over the country and the world become inspired to dream big and help each other overcome any obstacle," Nikki says. “Damgo, in Cebuano, also means dream.”

The book’s impact has been profound, forging deep connections between the young artists and the community that supports them. Tragically, two of the contributing artists, Richard and Ralph, passed away before the book’s completion. Yet, their legacy lives on through their artwork and the positive influence the project had on their lives.&nbsp;

"Remembering the moments with Richard, he remarked how he loves the art therapy sessions because it takes his mind off the pain, even for a few hours,'" Nikki reflects. “Meanwhile, Ralph was that one student who didn’t miss a single week’s lesson. He loved the art therapy sessions! He told me that he loved to paint Damgo’s adventures because it makes him imagine that he too, can one day go outside the country and see unbelievable sights.”

Publishing the first book is just the start of Nikki’s big plans for the Damgo Art Therapy Foundation. With two more books in development and a growing partnership with the International School Manila’s Visual Arts Club, the foundation is poised to continue its mission of providing joy and comfort to pediatric cancer patients.&nbsp;

"In the future, I hope to see more innovation in the art therapy execution, and more adventures of Damgo," Nikki says. “Excited for book 2!”

Young Hearts and Heroes: Meet the teenager who created a children’s storybook with pediatric cancer patients from Bahay Aruga

Paying homage to such a heartwarming culture, publishing house Bookshelf PH launches the first edition of its ongoing anthology called “Sari-Sari Stories: Romance Edition”. Just like the sari-sari store carries a variety of items, the books in the Sari-Sari Stories series will present various themes in each edition–from romance and family to other Filipino-centered stories and culture. How do we build our youth’s literacy and reading comprehension?

Publishing house Bookshelf PH recently partnered with Project Dionysus and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Marikina Mini Library this year by donating some of its in-house books by inspiring Filipino authors. As part of community development, this collaboration enriches the youth’s exposure to reading, providing them with an after-school activity to expand their reading comprehension and explore diverse genres of books beyond the classroom.

The donation of books also supports the thesis film by a group of dedicated undergraduate theater students from the Department of Performing Arts at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) called Project Dionysus.&nbsp;

“Our book donation hopes to give the students of PUP a new set of reads, and at the same time, serve as a donation drive to support Project Dionysus’ thesis film,” Michelle Dulinayan, Marketing Manager of Bookshelf said.

Their thesis on Streetlight Manifesto by Mixkaela Villalon revolves around a streetlamp being the only witness of two hired hitmen’s rendezvous every night who are responsible for Manila murders. Every day, a dead body shows up at that same streetlight. The search for truth ensues as the cases remain unsolved while the body count rises. Directed by Jetro Sebastian Tino, it reveals the creativity and wisdom that these students have accumulated over the years.

Bookshelf PH donated books to SK Marikina Mini Library in Barangay Jesus dela Peña. With the help of SK Chairwoman Joana Marie Dela Paz, SK Secretary Joselle Manglicmot, and SK Kagawads: Seth Nicole Torres, Nica Joy De Leon, Jonahr Eiz Dela Paz, Jean Hershey Reyes, Kevin Christian Tapel, the books were received by SK Kgds Johana Mae Damole and Rico Miguel Esteban, and SK Treasurer Ana Coleen de Asis.&nbsp;

Monette Quiogue, Co-founder of Bookshelf PH, also met Barangay Captain Rosette Sarmiento to discuss how Filipino-authored books can be more accessible in such communities.

“We want to encourage our youth to read more books and be inspired to explore genres written by local talent,” Quiogue said. “That way, we’re not just enriching their literacy at an early age, we’re also encouraging them to dream and feel represented in the books they read.”

Monette Quiogue, the co-founder of Ambidextr and Bookshelf PH, engaged in a discussion at Little Theater,&nbsp; UP Visayas in Iloilo City on April 27, 2024 as part of the BSBA Marketing students’ annual conference —ADCON 2024 with its theme, LikhAdvertising: Behind the Artistic Scenes of Creative Marketing. In its 24th year, it explored the synergy between art, culture, and effective campaigns. Ms. Quiogue's topic, LikhaRatura: The Transformative Art of Narrative Marketing, dwelled on the idea that writing a book not only establishes one as a thought leader, but also expands on one’s grasp of marketing strategies through avenues such as book marketing, content marketing, and partnerships. 

The event was spearheaded by Prof. Maria Theresa C. Albaña, and was organized by the 4th-year BSBA Marketing students from the University of the Philippines Visayas. Speakers were invited to discuss various aspects of creative marketing. The first speaker, Director Frances Anthea Redison, with her topic: “GlobaLikha: A Deep Dive into Culturally-Sensitive Marketing,” highlighted the importance of being aware of gender and culture when having collaborative work with different communities.&nbsp;

The discussion was followed by Ms. Monette Quiogue’s topic, “LikhaRatura: The Transformative Art of Narrative Marketing” in which she addressed key questions such as why one should write a book, how to begin the writing process, what message to convey, when to initiate the endeavor, and where to sell the finished book. Ms. Quiogue also mentioned that the most straightforward route to personal and professional growth lies in reading, highlighting the need to write books for people who aim for this growth. In her talk, she noted that by writing a book, you establish yourself as a thought leader where one can establish authority, reach diverse audiences, educate markets, develop strategic partnerships, and generate leads and sales — which are all beneficial in the business field.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her discourse also underscored the importance of creating a proficient team to assist with the process of publishing a book.
