/ Resorts World Sentosa honoured with “Sustainability Initiative of the Year” at inaugural Singapore MICE Awards
SINGAPORE, 3 August 2023 – Resorts World Sentosa (RWS, 圣淘沙名胜世界) was honoured with
the “Sustainability Initiative of the Year” title at the inaugural Singapore MICE Awards (SMA)
announced on 27 July 2023. Organised by the Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition
Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS) and supported by the Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau
(SECB), the SMA serves to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the MICE industry to
Singapore’s economic growth and tourism receipts.
The “Sustainability Initiative of the Year” award recognised RWS for its outstanding sustainability
practices for MICE which includes carbon and waste reduction at trade shows and conferences.
RWS has set the bar as a top sustainable events destination, most notably by being the first in the
world to achieve the coveted Events Industry Council (EIC)’s Platinum Certification based on its latest
2022 Sustainable Event Standards (Venue). Earlier in August 2021, RWS made a mark as the first
destination in the world to achieve both the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Destination
Criteria and GSTC Industry Criteria for Hotels.
Some of RWS’ latest key sustainability practices include commissioning works to quadruple its solar
panel sites in 2023, and its holistic waste management system which has reduced the integrated
resort’s operational waste-to-landfill intensity by nearly half, or 49.3% since it became fully
operational through various initiatives and recycling of 10 waste streams. RWS has also recently
inked a partnership with Honeywell Building Technologies to set up Singapore’s first large-scale
cloud-based Building Management System to drive energy reduction and decarbonisation as part of
RWS’ wider goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
As a tourism leader in Singapore, RWS actively shares and showcases its sustainability practices to
contribute towards a collective industry shift. These include providing industry feedback to SACEOS
in the development of the Singapore MICE Sustainability Roadmap, as well as guidelines for waste
and carbon emissions management for MICE events.
Ms Loh Su Kim, Senior Vice President, Attractions & Sustainability, RWS (罗淑琴, 景点与永续发展高
级副总裁, 圣淘沙名胜世界), said, “We are honoured to receive the Singapore MICE Award for
Sustainability Initiative of the Year and would like to thank SACEOS and the organising committee for
recognising RWS' commitment in driving and catalysing positive change in the MICE industry. We
firmly believe that sustainability is a key driver for long-term success in our industry and hope to
inspire others to create enduring impact and forge a more responsible world.”
Mr Richard Ireland, President, SACEOS, said, “Together with the MICE community, we would like to
congratulate RWS for winning the Sustainability Initiative of the Year award at the inaugural
Singapore MICE Awards. With Sustainability at the forefront of the industry’s priorities in this new
chapter of growth, RWS’ commitment and leadership in driving greener events has inspired the
industry in their respective sustainability journeys. Their well-deserved achievement has set new
benchmarks of excellence and raised the bar for innovation in MICE Sustainability.”
The award-winning integrated resort, equipped with a wide selection of premier conference and
meeting facilities, is set to host more than 500 MICE events in 2023. Notable events include Asia’s 50
Best Restaurants 2023 awards ceremony, BNI Singapore National Conference, and the upcoming
RehabWeek 2023. It will also be the host venue for the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Global
Conference in 2024 as the major international event takes place in Singapore for the first time. By
supporting the gathering of international experts in sustainable tourism, RWS aims to offer
opportunities for Singapore’s MICE stakeholders to expand their knowledge and elevate their
sustainability standards.
With its unwavering commitment to being a leading sustainable destination, RWS seeks to deliver
rewarding MICE experiences that combine world-class sustainability practices, business and leisure
elements to event organisers and delegates.
