AICON PH 2025: The Biggest AI Learning Event in the Country

MANDALUYONG CITY, Manila – Changemakers from various backgrounds and sectors gathered at Impact Happy Hours last July 2, at Refinery, Shangri-La Plaza Mall. The event has been running since 2017 and has been a community space for individuals and organizations interested in social impact to connect and collaborate. Impact Happy Hours’ main organizers are entrepreneur support organizations Villgro Philippines, xchange, and Ashoka Philippines, but the event has also been co-hosted with different partner organizations who have designed several ways to facilitate connections between attendees. The featured partner of last night’s event was the Good Start Challenge.

Attendees of Impact Happy Hours were invited to reflect on modern parenting, wellbeing, and caregiving within the family. “How difficult is it to get on a crowded city bus with a baby—and how many other challenges do parents face in daily life? We need to ask: can we redesign systems, services, and infrastructures for the wellbeing of parents and caregivers?” said Kathy Nothstine from Challenge Works, one of the implementing partners of the Good Start Challenge.

“We’re excited about the huge opportunities in the Philippines—especially with the growing digital economy, the rise of technology and innovation, and the potential to tap into indigenous solutions that can create more sustainable, lasting impact. At the same time, we are aware of the complex challenges Filipino parents face—from the increasing risks of climate-related disasters to high rates of teenage pregnancy—issues that disproportionately affect women and families in vulnerable communities,” Kathy added, highlighting why the Philippines is one of the eligible countries for the challenge.

The Good Start Challenge will support up to 22 finalists globally to develop their solution with €50,000 in funding and a package of non-financial support. Organizations that are addressing the wellbeing of caregivers from pregnancy and the first years of parenthood, are meeting the needs of underserved and marginalized communities, and have demonstrated effectiveness and are ready to take the next steps towards scaling are invited to apply.&nbsp;

At the end, up to six winners will receive €200,000 and the opportunity to showcase in front of prospective funders and partners. The opening remarks were followed by a panel of three social entrepreneurs, namely Nadine Angelica Gadia Casiño (ALIMA Mother Support Center), JM Dioso (Project Payatas PH), and MK Bertulfo (FH Moms) who shared their real stories and insights of systems-level solutions that center parental wellbeing.&nbsp;

“Aside from the lack of opportunities and education, one thing that I wanted to emphasize is that a lot of moms already have access to equipment and the experience but they lack the confidence,” said MK Bertulfo of FH Moms, speaking on the barriers women face.

Adding to the discussion on maternal challenges and care systems, Nadine Angelica Gadia Casiño of ALIMA Mother Support Center shared, “There are daycare centers, there are schools, but where are the spaces for moms?”

“We partnered with local government units to establish the first-ever city human milk bank and lactation support center—not just a pasteurizing facility, but a space where mothers receive skilled, individualized breastfeeding support… If we can create more breastfeeding clinics and mother support centers, then mothers will know where to go and I think collaboration is key for us to make that happen.”

The panelists’ stories and perspectives offered a glimpse into what’s possible when community-led solutions are given the support to grow. These served as a call to action for entrepreneurs with bold ideas to join the Good Start Challenge and scale their impact for parents and caregivers who need it most.

By integrating reforestation, water resource conservation, and biodiversity protection, the program seeks to transform the Siguil River Watershed into a self-sustaining ecosystem.

In celebration of&nbsp;Philippine Environment Month this June, Alsons Power reaffirms its dedication to environmental stewardship. The Group joins the nation in highlighting the importance of protecting the country’s natural resources, especially critical ecosystems like the Siguil River Watershed.

The Siguil River is one of the major river systems in Sarangani Province, playing a vital role in the region’s ecological balance and livelihood. It runs along the boundary between Sarangani and South Cotabato Provinces. It is a key natural resource, supporting agriculture, biodiversity, and livelihood.

Alsons Power’s WEP integrates assisted natural regeneration (ANR) and enrichment planting while promoting agroforestry and Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT). This not only strengthens the environment but also bolsters the local economy.&nbsp;

Beyond environmental preservation, WEP has also improved the lives of local communities, particularly farmers and Indigenous People (IPs). By empowering them as stewards of the land, the program supports sustainable livelihoods and paves the way for more resilient and inclusive growth.

As of the first quarter of 2025, WEP recorded the planting of&nbsp;71,523 trees, including&nbsp;36,337 agroforestry&nbsp;and&nbsp;35,186 reforestation species, with an impressive&nbsp;99% survival rate. Partner farmers not only met targets but exceeded them by cultivating and planting seedlings from their own farms, reinforcing community ownership and sustainability.

"Each tree we plant is a step toward a greener future; a testament to Alsons Power’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and stewardship," says Alcantara.

Empowering Communities, One Seedling at a Time

WEP’s impact goes beyond planting trees; it’s about cultivating knowledge. Since 2018, the program has provided hands-on training to local farmers, improving their coffee farming techniques. From seedling propagation to harvesting, processing, and post-harvest care, the program has equipped farmers with the skills needed to enhance the sustainability and market value of their crops.

“In the past, we planted coffee but didn’t know how to care for it. Most of it would die,” recalls IP farmer Manasan Galante. “Now, our farms are thriving. Alsons Power and CLAFI gave us the knowledge and support we needed. God has truly used your efforts to uplift us here in the mountains.”

This transformation was celebrated at the Coffee Harvest Festival, where 17 partner farms in Sitio Datal Basak yielded 754 kilograms of coffee cherries. Farmers have now mastered advanced techniques, such as drying, dehulling, and sorting green coffee beans (GCBs), producing 241 kilograms of premium ripe coffee cherries in a single season.

MANILA, Philippines - June 3, 2025 - In its continuous efforts towards local community service, the American Women’s Club of the Philippines (AWCP) has applied for and now won the Federation of American Women’s Club Overseas (FAWCO) 2025 Development Grant for their project in partnership with the Bukas Palad Foundation in the Critical Health Concerns category. The Bukas Palad Foundation is a non-profit and non-governmental organization located in Pasay City that aims to help impoverished children and elderly with education, livelihood, and sustainable development.&nbsp;

This grant will be used for Bukas Palad’s nutrition program targeting malnourished children. In addition to regular feedings of nutritious meals, the organization also educates&nbsp; the children and their families about healthy lifestyle habits to improve behaviors and mindsets that belie the issue of undernutrition. The $5000 of grant money will help fund meals of 20 children and the wages of four staff who will prepare, cook, and transport the meals as well as monitor the childrens’ food intake for 120 school days.

“It’s our first time applying for the FAWCO Health Development Grant and we are overjoyed to have won for the beneficiaries of our partner organization,” says AWCP President Denise Faulhaber.&nbsp;

This initiative is just one of many charitable endeavors that AWCP pursues. In talking about how this project aligns with AWCP’s core values, Co-President Keri Myers adds that, “As AWCP, we have always been dedicated to serve the community in our host country. For us and our members, it’s important to give back as much as possible.”

This was a particularly critical time for the Bukas Palad’s school based feeding program as new sponsors were needed for the upcoming school year.&nbsp; Thanks to the FAWCO Development Grant, AWCP has been able to step in to help Bukas Palad continue their important work for the new school year starting this June 2025.

“We are so grateful for the grant and the help that AWCP has extended to us,” says Bukas Palad leadership. “With the grant money, we will be able to continue our work with the children and families and help them become healthier and empower them to lead their lives with healthy habits.”

<a href="https://philkotse.com/mitsubishi-philippines-price-list">Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation</a>&nbsp;(MMPC) announced the rolling out of not just one but two corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaigns – a forestation project and a scholarship program.

The forestation project is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). It is a three-phased project that planted various species of trees on a 100-hectare land in different provinces of Luzon – Bangui, Ilocos Norte; Siniloan, Laguna; and Infanta, Quezon Province.

Along with the tree planting effort, the company also donated a lighthouse by the Agos River to assist fishermen and farmers.

“For 60 years, it’s been MMPC’s commitment to make life better for Filipinos not just through our vehicles, but also through our services and CSR efforts. And today, we are about to nurture this community’s future, one seed at a time. I hope that the seeds we plant today will flourish for generations to come,” said MMPC Chairman Noriaki Hirakata.

Meanwhile, the Balik-Baterya Scholarship Program help fund scholarships for 20 senior high school students of Don Jose Integrated High School and Biñan City Senior High School – Timbao Campus. The program is funded by the proceeds from the recycling and disposal of used hazardous lead-acid batteries generated in the&nbsp;<a href="https://philkotse.com/market-news/200000-mitsubishi-l300-production-milestone-7310">MMPC plant</a>.

“I am grateful that this collaboration has led us to contribute not just to the preservation of our environment, but also to giving back to the community by raising funds to support scholarships for students. PFI signed a memorandum of agreement with the Technological University of the Philippines - Manila, as represented by its president, Engr. Reynaldo P. Ramos, PhD., EnP, and Dr. Margaret S. Aquino, the dean of the Office of Student Affairs, to herald the new partnership between the two institutions. This year, PHINMA Foundation will welcome students of TUP-Manila as it reaffirms its commitment to provide better opportunities to more Filipinos. This will increase this year’s intake of students to 70.

“Through this assistance, our college students in need of regular allowances will be able to pursue their dreams of becoming engineers. I am sure that with the generosity of PHINMA will return to them a hundredfold as the beneficiaries become instruments of social transformation, progress, and development,” said TUP-Manila President Ramos.

The PHINMA National Scholarship Program has produced over 250 licensed teachers, engineers, and accountants together with the 4 schools it has partnered with since 2006: University of the Philippines, Philippine Normal University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and PHINMA University of Pangasinan. The schools signed during the ceremony a memorandum of agreement to continue their partnership with PHINMA Foundation.

TUP-Manila will also benefit from the expansion of PHINMA Foundation’s Science and Engineering Education Fund (SEEF), along with Caloocan National Science and Technology High School. SEEF provides support to high school students from esteemed institutions and engineering students from universities recognized as Centers of Excellence.&nbsp;
