Angkas breaks new ground for women in tech, transport, says founder

During her speech at the 18th Annual General Assembly of the Philippine Federation of Local Councils of Women (PFLCW), she encouraged women leaders to strive for uplifting lives within their respective organizations.

A cornerstone of Tham’s presentation was the role of technology in driving social change. With a vision to revolutionize the informal motorcycle taxi industry known as ‘habal-habal’, the ride-hailing app Angkas has been instrumental in providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for Filipinos.

However, Tham said that Angkas’ ambitions go beyond improving transportation. The platform has provided marginalized individuals with training, support, and tools to become professional motorcycle taxi drivers, she said.

Through this approach, Tham said that Angkas has created opportunities for entrepreneurship, enabling individuals to uplift their families and escape the cycle of poverty.

“We were successful not because we launched a ride-hailing app… we became the no. 1 motorcycle taxi app by fostering trust and connection with our bikers,” Tham said. “My challenge to you is to dig deeper into problems and address the real needs of those we serve, making a lasting, positive change.”

Senator Cynthia Villar also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of narrowing the gender digital divide in the country. Villar warned of a growing shortage of skilled workers due to this gap, calling the matter urgent as almost 90% of jobs will require digital skills by 2025.

In response to Villar’s remarks, Tham advocated for the use of technology as an empowering tool for businesses and communities. She highlighted the success of Angkas in creating a supportive environment where skill and hard work are the primary factors for prosperity.

“You shouldn’t have to be exceptional to earn a decent living or simply provide for your family,” Tham said. “Let’s create one million jobs, transform lives, and make our nation stronger.”

Angkas, through its innovative use of technology and inclusive initiatives, continues to empower and inspire Filipinos, demonstrating the transformative power women wield in the transport and technology sectors.
